Companion robots can help improve the well-being of elderly people and high-need children and reduce the burden on caregivers

A study in Singapore by AWWA, in collaboration with the Singapore University of Social Sciences and supported by Temasek Foundation, found that AI-powered companion robots can significantly improve the well-being of elderly people and children with high needs. Conducted between July 2024 and March 2026 with over 170 participants, the robot “LOVOT” helped enhance users’ emotional health, communication, attention, and independence, while also improving seniors’ quality of life and acceptance of technology. Caregivers reported reduced workload, as the robot lessened the need for constant supervision. However, researchers emphasised that such robots are meant to complement, not replace, human interaction, serving as supportive tools in care settings.
