The article highlighted the importance of Active Ageing Centres in residential areas to help seniors stay active through activities that promote physical and mental well-being. Ms Alijah Salleh and Mr Ridwan Mohamed Salleh, both dedicated participants at AWWA’s Active Ageing Centre, shared that they began their involvement in the centre when a former AWWA staff volunteer at the centre visited their home and encouraged them to join. Now, they have been active at the centre for two years.
“For seniors like me who may live alone or have children who live far away, this centre serves as an important support system. It not only provides a space for physical activity but also offers friendship and a sense of community,” said Ms Alijah. The couple emphasised that by being at the centre, it gives them energy and opportunities to socialize and form new social connections, even among seniors who have language challenges or limited communication skills. This is in line with Mr. Lee’s speech at NDR that AAC gives the group the opportunity to socialize with friends, participate in fun activities and make use of time.
