Social Work Month 2022 – Nurharyati of AWWA Early Intervention Centre

We celebrate the dauntless spirit of our social workers on Social Work Month 2022 which took place on 15 March 2022. We want to thank you, all social workers, for tirelessly giving your best to bring joy, comfort, and peace to the hearts of your clients. Over the next few days, we will be sharing with you the stories of our social workers.

“Back then when I was in the teaching line, I taught students from low-income backgrounds and complex family dynamics. I felt that there are so much that I could reach out to support my students and their families. That inspired me to embark into the Social Work journey and that is how it began.

As a social worker at AWWA Early Intervention Centre, I ensure families and clients have timely access to the services they require ranging from referral and enrolment to screenings and transitions. There are many cases that left an imprint in my life. One that stood out prominently is a case that involved a grandmother and her grandson who has additional needs. What struck me was the bond that they shared. Right from the start, I saw her resilience and determination to make sure her grandson receives the assistance that he requires. Through this experience, I realised that one significant role we play as social workers is to be the pillars of our clients. When their walls are crumbling, we lift them up so that they can continue to run the race.

We are not miracle workers. We are only human. Sometimes we feel down in the dumps. That’s why it is important to have supportive colleagues who spur each other on. Seven years and counting, looking back on this journey, I know I made the right decision” – Nurharyati, Social Worker at AWWA Early Intervention Centre.
