“Before I know it, I have already dedicated almost half my life to the social service sector.” Meet Huixia, our Director of Family Services. This International Women’s Day (IWD), we want to recognise the incredible women who make a difference in our lives and communities. Let us hear from Huixia about her thoughts on IWD.
“I started my social work journey at AWWA 18 years ago after graduating. Up until today, I am still learning and growing with my colleagues. Through my work, I have had the privilege of journeying with many individuals, couples, and families and seeing them overcome their challenges. This first-hand experience fuels me to give back by supporting others in their community.
Every year, on 8 March, we rally our hearts and minds to celebrate the achievements of women as well as to pause to take stock of how far we have come. Celebrating IWD reminds me that society grows and thrives when each community progresses. On the flip side, it also reminds me that gender inequalities still exist in many parts of the world. Thankfully, we have come a long way and made significant progress!
Reflecting on my growing-up years, I count myself fortunate to be surrounded by empowered women. I know of many (female) peers holding leadership positions and achieving amazing things in vastly diverse fields. Their success stories only cement my belief that women can succeed and find joy in their respective careers.
As a leader, I make conscious efforts to ensure that ample opportunities are given to my colleagues so that they can grow in their profession. It is also encouraging to see them pushing each other to greater heights! Real change can happen if there is a paradigm shift in mindset. Having seen and experienced it first-hand, I strive to be an enabler in my workplace, where everyone can succeed and celebrate each other’s achievements.”
