Amsyar, a Community Integration Service (CIS) client, was eight years old when he was enrolled in AWWA CIS with Spina Bifida. While striving to excel in his academic pursuits, at the age of nine, Amsyar took interest in para-cycling, and this sparked his innate athletic prowess.
In 2019, Amsyar represented Singapore at his first regional competition in Thailand. Subsequently, he represented Singapore at the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation World Games 2020 in Thailand. In recognition of his regional and local achievements in the sport, Amsyar was awarded the young talent awards (Arts and Sports) at the CIS Awards 2021 that happened last November 2021. Most recently, on 5th March 2022, he participated in a duathlon organised by Metasport.
“I initially joined the sport as a form of recreation – nothing more. In 2016, my coach offered me to join the development team as he saw the potential in me to compete in competitions (The development team is a group of athletes that possesses the ability to compete in major competitions). I took up the offer, and the rest is history. The desire to improve my skills motivates me even though training might get gruelling. My future goal is to participate and represent Singapore in major competitions such as the ASEAN Paralympic games”, said Amsyar.
What’s next for Amsyar? He will be commencing his Higher Nitec course in ITE College West in April 2022. We wish him all the best in his studies and athletic endeavours.
