Every year, UNESCO-UNEVOC leads the world in celebrating World Youth Skills Day on 15 July, to highlight the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work, and entrepreneurship. We would also like to take this opportunity to feature one of our regular volunteers who reach out to youths at AWWA Family Service Centre to tutor them and provide them with emotional support!
“Since transiting from studying to full-time work, I’ve been looking out for opportunities to volunteer and help others with the time I have outside of work. I was introduced to the youth tutoring programme by a friend who was a regular volunteer with AWWA and decided to join in. I’ve been blessed with many great mentors and dedicated teachers in my growing up years and I truly appreciate their presence and honesty in sharing their life experiences that helped guide me through my own experiences. Thus, these small group tutoring sessions present an opportunity to not just impart knowledge but connect with the kids/youths and understand the new challenges faced by one growing up in Singapore today. More often than not, I find the kids I tutor teaching me new things instead, such as social media trends and life hacks. It has been a rewarding and humbling time for me and I’m thankful for this opportunity and the work that AWWA is doing for the community.”
